11) Program note for the piece (100 words): 
  
Fortune Smiles takes as its point of departure the innocuous platitudes, ambiguous predictions, 
and even industrial taste of the humble fortune cookie. Fortune Smiles is a work born of fate 
intertwined as the fortunes of two companions are combined and sonified into a musical 
texture exploring new vistas of harmony and color. The piece integrates equal temperament 
with microtonality by using a "virtual performer" tuned entirely according to harmonic series 
partials up through 55. 

INGREDIENTS:
Each fortune cookie is baked using: Enriched Wheat Flour, Sugar, Eggs, Soybean Oil, Water, 
Dextrose, FD&C Yellow #'s 5&6, and Artificial Vanilla Flavor.
 
 
12) Biography of the artist (100 words): 
 
Timothy Ernest Johnson's recent compositional accolades include being a finalist in Alea III 
2008, a prize winner in "Musica Nova" 2008 and a presenter at the 2005 International Lisp 
Conference, all involving algorithmically composed music. Other music programming projects 
include creating electronic realizations of Ben Johnston's string quartets, software to tune harmony 
by pure intervals (at the behest of Shania Twain) and software tools for use in analyzing microtonal 
music. Besides composition/programming Johnson is an active guitarist, having premiered many 
new works in North America, Europe and Asia. He also plays viola in the Lake Shore Symphony 
Orchestra.
